TRANSMISSION OF INFECTIONS

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Schools inherently foster the transmission of infections from person to person because they are in a group setting in which people are in close contact and share supplies and equipment.  We can be instrumental in keeping our school and community healthy by encouraging sick students and staff to stay home when they are ill, practicing good hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol based hand sanitizer, encouraging good respiratory etiquette by coughing or sneezing into a tissue or arm and by cleaning and disinfecting workspaces and tools.

For your child’s own well-being and the well-being of other students and staff, please do not send your child to school if he/she have been vomiting, have diarrhea, have a temperature, or have a harsh cough or constantly running nose during the past 24 hours.  If you child is ill enough to require over the counter or prescription medication at school for their illness, then he/she is too ill to be at school.  Additionally, if your child is too ill to participate in after school activities or physical education then he/she is too ill to be at school.

Students who are returning to school after being diagnosed with a communicable disease should be symptom free for at least 24 hours, unless the Primary Care Provider provides written documentation to the school allowing the student to return to school earlier.

It is important to follow these guidelines when determining if your child should attend school when he/she is ill.  There are a number of students and staff whose immune systems are compromised which makes them more susceptible to illness.

Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions or concerns.  By working together we can ensure that students have a healthy and safe school year.

Thank you,

NUT ALLERGY
INFORMATION

Dear parents or guardians,

This letter is to inform you that there are students at both Granite Street School and Stearns Junior Senior High School who have severe food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts.  It is important that there is strict avoidance of this food to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction.  We are asking for your help to provide students with a safe school environment.

Any exposure of peanuts or tree nuts to certain students may cause a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment.  To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you do not send any peanut or nut containing products to school with your child that will be eaten in the classroom.  If your child has eaten peanuts or tree nuts before coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands and face have been thoroughly washed before entering the school.  While it is near impossible to maintain a “nut free” school, the staff at the Millinocket School Department is requesting your consideration and assistance with this issue.

We appreciate your support and understanding.  Please do not hesitate to contact the school with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Mrs. Carr/RN
