BATS MATTER!

Bat houses donated by Jacob & Matthew Kowalski
Picture
Bats play a critical role in our ecosystem.  The death of over six million bats translates to bigger problems for the agricultural industry.  Insect eating bats provide a significant pest-control service, saving three billion dollars in the agricultural industry.  They also protect humans and animals from diseases such as West Nile Virus, Encephalitis, and Heart Worm in dogs and cats.

Every year Granite St. School students participate in an art contest sponsored by the Millinocket Literary Club.  This year students were read books about the plight of the bat and the role bats play in our ecosystem.  Art teacher Victoria Fiske took over the project helping students put their thoughts about bats onto paper with an illustration.  The only criteria we had for students are that they draw a bat and its habitat.  Those illustrations were given to the Literary Club who will select one winner from classroom in a springtime assembly.  Fourth grade students will do a service learning project involving “Bats Matter” to tie into their reading, writing, speaking, and government curriculum.
  • Writing and reading a persuasive letter to the town council educating them on how important the bat population is to the ecosystem in our community.
  • Students will construct a pamphlet for distribution throughout the community on the plight of the bat explaining how bat houses on the Michaud Trail help our community.
  • Writing letters to area businesses asking for donations to supply materials to accomplish their goal.
