Granite Street Elementary School Library
Granite Street Elementary School is excited to enhance our library with updated State Books and Presidents series to support our 4th-grade students' annual exploration of the 50 states. Our current collection is outdated, with missing states and outdated presidential information. Upgrading these resources will provide accurate, comprehensive, and inclusive learning materials to inspire curiosity and foster success. Your donation can help us create a library full of updated knowledge and endless possibilities for our students. Let’s invest in their future together—donate today at https://www.ourkatahdin.com/support/community-projects/

Students should not be dropped off at Granite before 7:30 each morning unless your child has chorus practice.
Students should not have cell phones at school. We are also seeing more students wearing smart watches which is causing disruptions in learning. These should be left at home.

Our fifth grade students have been participating in some exciting science projects in recent weeks. Both classes have been learning about the Earth's rotation and revolution. This involved building shadow boxes, also known as sundials, to learn about how the sun's position changes the shadow's direction and length. In order to learn more about which constellations are visible during the different seasons, they built a Universe in a Box.

We had a wonderful 100th day of school on Friday, February 7th. Some students and staff wore shirts proclaiming 100 days of school. Others dressed up as if they were 100 years old, wore clothing with 100 items attached to it, or wore necklaces made with 100 things. We also had classes that made headpieces to mark this special day of the school year.

A HUGE thank you to all of the students and their families who made donations for the Millinocket School Department's food pantry as part of our 100 day celebration. We collected 150 containers of pasta, 127 cans of soup, 146 containers of cereal, and 41 containers of other food items. We appreciate your generosity.

Today Stearns High School wore red in support of Cardiovascular disease and women's health. Anyone wearing red stood in a heart shaped formation and received a free bag of concession popcorn! A big thank you to our photographer, Mr. McLean, for taking the pic, Mr. Cullen for popping the popcorn with a few students and Mrs. Hayes for helping to organize raising awareness!

These 4th graders volunteered to read the final copies of their opinion essays to Miss Merry. The prompt was whether or not you agree with a mayor's plan to make a law requiring anyone under the age of 16 to wear a helmet if they are on anything with wheels such as bikes, scooters, etc. Each of these students agreed with the law and had some very valid reasons for their decision.

Granite Street student have been learning and practicing new skills over the past few weeks. PK made structures with blocks and made stain glass snowman pictures. First graders learned about addends and sums as well as various ways to check their addition work. Third graders have been learning about nonfiction features as well as main ideas and details. Fourth graders chant Pencils Ready before starting their writing work for the day. In PE, fourth graders have two teams of students playing scooter ball. Stay tune for more exciting news about what students are learning.
