This week we have some special events happening. On Tuesday and Thursday, we will wear school spirit or blue and white clothing to support the Stearns Field Hockey team that will have a playoff game on Tuesday and Stearns football team that will have a playoff game on Friday. Students and staff will also be dressing up for Halloween on Friday. As a reminder, students' costumes should not include a mask, fake weapons, and anything scary or gory.

On Thursday, October 23rd, students in 3rd-5th grade were invited to Mrs. Reece's room to listen to a guest speaker. Mrs. Reece's brother from Texas, Dylan "Ceasar" Zayasbazan, talked about his experience hiking the Appalachian Trail. The students learned lots of interesting facts by viewing a slideshow of pictures he shared, listening to an interview where Mrs. Reece asked him questions, and by answering questions presented by the fifth graders. He started his journey at Springer Mountain, Georgia , and ended at the top of Mount Katahdin. This trail is roughly 2,190 miles long. It took him approximately 5 1/2 months to hike the whole trail. His trail name given to him by other hikers is Caesar because of his hair. He encountered many animals including bears, snakes, a moose, turtles, frogs, and cows. He started off hiking with a group, but became separated from them and did most of the hike alone. He had only one set of clothes that he wore during the presentation and he had worn out two pairs of sneakers on the hike. Dylan showed the students the backpack he carried the whole trip along with some of the things in it such as a tent, a water purifier, small cooker that attaches to a small gas tank, freeze dried food, etc. One morning when he was in Maine, he heard a rustling noise and thought there was a bear outside of his tent, but it was a moose. His favorite state to hike in was Maine.

Fourth graders have been working on Halloween themed stories in which their teacher or principal turned into either a witch or Frankenstein. Some of their narratives were spooky, and some were funny.

A playground committee has been formed at Granite Street to work on updating our playground and beautifying our school grounds. Thanks to a generous donation from Our Katahdin, 14 trees were purchased from Richardson's in Patten. On Friday, Ocotober 10th, Shelley Farrington and Patric Santerre helped each class adopt and plant a tree. Thank you to Louie DiFrederico for digging the holes in preparation for this event.

The Fourth graders have been learning about September 11th, first responders, and medical professionals. As a cumulating activity, students invited family members who worked in the medical field to a special breakfast. Groups of students had created posters which were on display, and some students read poems and thank you messages they had composed.
