american school experience program (ASE)

Stearns Junior-Senior High School now offers the short-term American School Experience Program (ASE).

The ASE - American School Experience Program gives students ages 14-18 a taste of life in America with the opportunity to attend school for one, two or three months!

ASE is for students who:

- Are looking for a short term American high school experience before committing to a full semester or year.

- Allows students to study in the U.S. at an affordable price.

- Allows students to visit an American High School during a school break.

The American School Experience Program (ASE) is a short term F-1 High School Exchange Program.  It gives a student the opportunity to study in an American high school for 1-3 months while living with a host family.  ASE allows flexible enrollment dates throughout the year.  Students who complete the program can extend or re-apply for the semester or year.  ASE program has all the benefits of a full year exchange program at a fraction of the cost.

For more information about the program, contact the Millinocket School Department at (207) 723-6400 or email international@millinocketschools.org.

My name is Emma Munoa.  I’m a sixteen year old girl from Spain.  I decided to spend three months of my junior year in America as an exchange student.  I came to Millinocket, Maine and I had one of the greatest experiences of my life. My host family was amazing.  They were so talkative and nice since the very first moment.  They made me feel very comfortable.  They allowed me and encouraged me to do activities and hang out with my friends. I met a lot of people in my first days of school.  My classmates and teachers were so nice to me.  It didn’t take long to make friends. I joined the field hockey team and the basketball team.  Even though it was my first time playing field hockey, I really liked it.  I met a lot of girls and they all supported me and cheered for me when I was playing. I have learned and improved my English enormously, thanks to the classes, but more importantly to be speaking all the time.  I had time to do my homework, go to practices and hang out.  I received high honors for my first quarter grades.
I went to all the home football games and it was awesome, not because of the sport, but because everyone was there.  It was a social event and I really enjoyed it.  Also, the school organized a Halloween dance where I went with my friends.  We had a really good time. I was supposed to leave in November, but I was having such a great time that I didn’t want to leave.  I decided to extend my stay one more month. The last weeks were so sad.  My friends did not want me to leave.   I was really upset because I am going to miss them and my host family so much.  We will still keep in touch. After all I highly recommend doing an exchange in a foreign country.

"It indeed has been a wonderful journey and I am so sad that it has come by so quickly.  I haven't traveled outside of the State, as there is so much to do in Millinocket and the towns surrounding it.  I am absolutely loving the outdoors here and wish that my time didn't have to end so soon".  - Charlotte, Australia

"I decided to go on an exchange program because I wanted to have the experience of living in another country, challenge myself to learn another language, improve my English skills, meet different people and know more about the American culture.  I have been able to accomplish this by going to school and doing my best to keep my grades high, trying to make friends, being sociable, trying to ignore all the stereotypes, being polite and caring about the people around me.  My favorite memory was going to Boston with my host family.  We stayed in the city for 5 days. We went to a lot of different places and had fun with friends."  - Matheus, Brazil

My name is Enoch Lin. I attended Stearns High School at the beginning of my senior year in high school, because of the cooperation between Liren (my international high school in China) and Stearns. I'm now studying computer science at the University of Maine. I work for International Admissions at the Office of International Programs and as a web app developer for the School of Biology and Ecology. I appreciated the opportunity that Liren offered me to study at Stearns. One year was not long enough, but it was just enough so I did not have to face the cultural shock when I chose to continue studying in the US. It made the transaction from one culture to another smoother than I expected. At the same time, I made some great friends and formed some wonderful relationships with local people. It was a shame that I could not stay at Stearns for a longer period of time.
